Early College Accepting Applicants
It's round three for Legacy Early College High School hopefuls vying for a seat at Temple College in Taylor.

While Feb. 1 is the last official date for accepting applications, Richard Kolek, principal at Legacy Early College, said they have not reached their maximum number of applicants and will most likely continue to accept applications until May or June.

There are only 100 spots available for incoming high school freshman to take college-level classes and earn up to 60 hours of college credit before they graduate high school. Currently there are about 70 applications from Hutto and Taylor students.

Kolek said he urges students to begin applying as soon as possible. The application requires an essay, interview and teacher recommendations, which can be a long process, he said.

Kolek said starting this semester, nearly 65 percent of the students are now taking college level classes as high school freshman.

In early November, the program started Friday clubs for technology, art, sign language and chess.

Just before Christmas, the student body also elected officers to their first student council. Kolek said in addition to these activities they will still look into adding intramural sports once the semester gets going.

Early Legacy students are not allowed to participate in non-academic extracurricular activities at their home high school or activities that may interfere with their studies.

“It all depends on their academic performance and the amount of work they have - they probably have about 2 or 3 hours of homework every night,” he said.

“They have to have a good work ethic to be successful.”

Anyone interested in applying can pick up an application from their middle school counselor's office, Temple College or online at www.ewchec.com.
